  • He died there, circa 1806, and as flood waters of the Broad River prevented his family's returning his body to North Carolina, he was buried on the banks of the river, near the present town of Comer.

  • From The Williford Family by William Bailey Williford, 1961:
    
    "Samuel Williford is listed in the First Census of the United States, 1790, as a resident of Halifax District in Warren County, North Carolina. Family tradition states that he and three of his children moved to Georgia between 1800 and 1803, settling in Oglethorpe County*.  He died there, circa 1806, and as flood waters of the Broad River prevented his family's returning his body to North Carolina, he was buried on the banks of the river, near the present town of Comer.  Samuel Williford's wife, who is said to have died early in life, is believed to have been a Miss Williams of North Carolina.
           The three children of Samuel Williford who accompanied their father to Georgia were: William Williams Williford…Samuel Williford… and Julia Williford. She married David W. Meadow…"
           *The late Quincy Lamar Williford of Madison, Georgia, wrote (see Source note 53) that 'A Williford of whose given name I am not sure, came from North Carolina, probably near the Roane River - Salisbury-to Georgia about 1800 or 1803, and spent a while in Oglethorpe County where he died about 1806. Tis said his wife was dead before he left…".
    
    From The Wilford-Williford Treks into America, by Eurie Pearl Wilford Neel, published in 1959:
    
    "Around 1800 or 1803 Theophilus removed his family from Rowan County, North Carolina to Oglethorpe County, GA, where he died a few years later. When the family tried to take his body back to North Carolina for burial, the Broad River was so high that they could not get across and had to bury him on the Oglethorpe side. The family, it is claimed, soon moved into Elbert (Madison County since 1812). (HBJ) Issue of Theophilus Williford and wife: Elizabeth Williford married Berry J. Meadow of Madison County County, Samuel Williford, William Williams Williford".
    
    The three children of Samuel Williford who accompanied their father to Georgia were: William Williams Williford, Samuel Williford, and Julia Williford. She married David W. Meadow.
