  • "Elizabeth Johns who married Sir William Awbrey was descended on both sides from the Berkeley family. This family descends many different ways from Charlemagne, as well as the majority of the early Norman kings of England. This line would apply to you as you are a descendant of John Awbrey Sr., a son of Sir William Awbrey and Elizabeth Johns. This line would not apply to the other Awbrey branches, such as the group that immigrated to Pennsylvania, or the branch that continued to reside in England as Baronets of Llantrithydd. The Virginia Awbreys are the only ones descended from Elizabeth Johns.

    "I have a copy of the will from the National Library of Wales, but the Elizabethan handwriting is difficult to read. Nevertheless the names ("sonnes")Henry, John and Thomas and the other children are legible. That Sir William had sons Henry, John and Thomas along with another son Reginald (who was killed at Edgehill in the English Civil War) and several daughters is also attested in Clark's Families of Glamorgan, Jones History of the County of Brecknock, and Lewys Dwnn's Heraldic Visitiations of Wales. I have passenger records showing that Henry Awbrey sailed to Virginia from Bristol which would have been the nearest port, and other records showing that he transported John on one of his voyages. The will is excerted in Rev. J. Jones -Davies pamphlet on Abercynrig. As Jon has indicated there is much secondary evidence for the family relationship. What we don't have is a primary document or coat of arms stating that the father of Henry Awbrey of Virginia was Sir William Awbrey of Wales. However,I am heartened to see that Jon has added more solid circumstantial evidence. Sir William Awbrey married Elizabeth Johnes a descendant of Edward III. Sir William is a descendant of Henry I in his own right. Jon, if you are reading this, I think you have sufficient info to do your article. It would help if someone could actually view the Welsh parish records to get exact dates of birth for the sons."

    "Jane Johnstone's mother was Jane Johnstone Martin of Westmoreland County, Virginia. Her father is not known. Accorging to Martin's will in 1677, Jane Johnstone and Elizabeth Paine were sisters. That means that John And Jane only had three children: Sarah, John, and Francis.
    As to your query on Philip Awbrey, Carter in later editions recanted her belief that Philip was the son of Samuel. She said that she came into evidence that proved Philip to be the son of Thomas Awbrey of Loudoun County, Virginia-- Samuel's brother.
    
    All secondary sources say that John Awbrey's father was Sir William Awbrey of Abercynrig, Brecknockshire, Wales. Scholarly articles on Henry Awbrey, John's brother, attest to this, as does the Jamestowne Society, Bishop Meade, etc. However I have recently uncovered evidence that supports this. In the 1720s, Francis Awbrey was living in Stafford County, Virginia. According to land records from 1728, Francis had for neighbors William Berkeley and George Turberville. Both the Berkeley and Turberville families were close kinsmen to Sir William Awbrey of Abercynrig. Furthermore, recent evidence from a social historian of Virginia has convinced me that this family is indeed descended from Sir William. Richard Awbrey of Essex County, Virginia, a son of Henry Awbrey, and first cousin of Francis Awbrey, left two silver seals in his will -- one of which had been his grandfather's, attesting to the fact that Richard's grandfather, who was not a Virginia colonist, was himself a member of an armorial family. Henry Awbrey and John Awbrey are mentioned in the will of Sir William Awbrey, and in other contemporary sources as the sons of Sir William Awbrey."
