  • Will of Patrick Jack dated May 19, 1780 mentions daughter Lylly Nicholson.
    Joseph served as executor and his wife is clearly named in the Jack will.
    
    Joseph and Lillias Jack Nicholson and some of his wife's kin moved to GA together. There is always this possible conflict as well; the Jacks were
    respected early founders of Charlotte, NC.  They married into the
    elite Presbyterian Scots families of Alexander and Sample, had good
    property, and a voice in town affairs.Almost of the Jacks were highly
    in favor of the Revolution in 1774/75. The town leaders found British
    rule untenable, Lillias Jack Nicholson's younger brother (or nephew, who was considered by some too young for the mission) rode off to Philadephia with the famous (in NC at least) Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in 1775, only to be rebuffed once he delivered the statement to the Continental Congress.
    
    However, conflicts in the area and indeed within families were quite
    common in the border frontier settlements of NC/SC and Tories were
    not uncommon among these Scots and German immigrants, not to mention
    the Quakers in nearby counties.  I've seen both Nicholson and Jack
    names among the Tory lists; on the other hand, Culbert/Cuthbert
    Nicholson bought/held confiscated Tory properties which were sold to benefit the fledling University of North Carolina (big lists in NC records).
    Joseph Nicholson was on early Mecklenburg militia lists. Theyleft  town so soon after the war, when the family was so well connected and well situated, makes the whole a bit suspect.  There's an apocryphal story in one family that John's son George was rewarded for tending horses for the British in Mecklenburg.
    
    The Brits (Cornwallis) had made Charlottetown a base (a well laid out
    village only a dozen years old but with sizable courthouse and academies and several churches by 1778/9). This was one reason the town fathers used the nearby Nick's tavern of Joseph NICHOLSON for meetings.  The boys were organized into guerilla troops that harassed the British soldiers as they marched in order through narrow lanes in and out of Charlottetown.
    
    Some of the other Jacks took a complicated migration route to Texas in that it seems they went through the mountains into TN; those early mountaineers often moved frequently; zigged and zagged through the mountains into KY, back to the eastern states, back again into MO and AR, down into AL, etc.  They often were longhunters as well as settlers.  I know that some of the Jack brothers went along with the Crocketts, Houstons,  and Tarrants, (these people were all in NC together before the Revolution, many in Mecklenburg and neighboring Rowan and Lincoln Co.) to become, with lots of those early pre-Alamo Texans, heroes in the fight for Texas independence.
