Joseph Candour

  • Joseph CANDOUR and probable second wife Mary (guess from the above dates) would seem to Josias and Rose CANDOUR's son and is apparently the ancestor of the western PA/ Illinois Candor families. Resident of West Derry 1756. Witness and executor of several wills, including with James ANDERSON the will of John ALLISON 1767 Donegal--Was ALLISON's wife Ann possibly a CANDOR?
    
    CANDORs of the third generation in PA would be:
    
    Josias CANDOR (Joseph, Josias) married (according to IL bios of the CANDORs) to Mary HOWARD (Thomas, Gordon), who moved to Union Co., PA. Their children: Charlotte, Thomas CANDOR born 1796 married
    Margaret MONTGOMERY (John, William, John), Harriet CANDOR married ca 1835 Joseph MARR, Joseph, Lydia, Robert, probably Franklin, possibly J. Howard. Thomas CANDOR with brother Robert left PA ca 1836 for Mercer Co., IL.
    
    Joseph CANDOR (Joseph?, Josias) has daughter Roseanna b ca 1780 in
    Franklin Co., PA, who married John McLAUGHLIN (William McLAUGHLIN and Catherine MEYERS).
    
    Mary CANDOR (Joseph?, Josias) married Alexander RODDY, Sr. (James
    J. and Mary HALL--is she possibly a sister to Hugh HALL? Their children
    James HALL Sr. and Prudence RODDY married Lancaster ca 1734 and later moved to Iredell Co., NC, next to Mecklenburg/Rowan.) The RODDYs were in Cumberland Co., PA, before moving to NC. Their daughter Roseanne married a John MONTGOMERY and moved to Spartanburg, SC, along with brother Alexander RODDY, Jr., who was married to Agnes JAMESON (John).
    
    CANDORs who may be daughters and sons of Josias, the immigrant, and
    therefore probable siblings of Joseph buried in the Donegal Cemetery:
    
    Sarah CANDOUR married to Hugh HALL, Sr., said by some to have died on ship as the family immigrated; Joseph CANDOR was co-executor with widow Sarah of Hugh HALL's will, Derry Twp. 1756/58.
    
    Susannah CANDOR married to John McQUEEN, Sr., also of Derry
    ca 1758. Is this McQUEEN connected to the McEWENs or McQUEENs of
    Iredell/Rowan/Mecklenburg Co., NC?
    
    James CANDOR/CANDER also a resident of West Derry 1756 and has
    a KENNEDY living with him. OR is this a possible son of Joseph?
    
    Jannet CANDOR married First Presbyterian Philadelphia 1736 Cuthbert NICHOLSON > Carlisle, Cumberland Co., PA, until 1766 and then on
    to Mecklenburg Co., NC. Probable sons Joseph and John NICHOLSON (my
    line) on to Wilkes/Greene/Oglethorpe Co., GA, after the Revolution,
    where they intermarried with several HALLs, an ALLISON, and a
    McLAUGHLIN.
    
    There also is some sort of a CANDOR connection with the following
    surnames, as yet undiscovered; however, all these surnames can be found in Lancaster Co., PA, in the 1730-60 era:
    
    BASKIN: William BASKIN, Jr. (William, John) had a STUART mother and a MONTGOMERY grandmother. He seems to have been born ca 1736 Lancaster Co., PA but his family moved to SC, where he married
    1769 Abbeville, SC, Ann REID (George, George?--no idea if connected to
    REID in PA or Rowan Co., NC). This William BASKIN, Jr., named a son
    William CANDOR BASKIN and a daughter Margaret CANDOR BASKIN. Other middle names of his children were REID, HALL, and ALEXANDER. The BASKIN family emigrated supposedly from Donegal, Ireland.
    DOUGHERTY: Robert DOUGHERTY (Michael II, Michael?) born ca 1766 Rockbridge?, VA, married ca 1790 Jessamine Co., KY, Nancy WILLIAMS (James, James) named a son born 1810 CANDOR DOUGHERTY;
    daughter Julia DOUGHERTY (Robert, Michael II, Michael?) born 1796
    married Samuel FRENCH and named a son born 1824 Orange Co., IN, John
    CANDOR FRENCH .McFADDEN: CANDOR McFADDEN born ca 1710 shows up in Chester Co., SC, by late 1760's with wife Mary GUY. Ggrandson CANDOR Newton McFADDEN (James, Ralph, Candor) born 1829 Fayette Co., TN.
