General Notes

"The tradition of the Candor family is in effect that the founder was a Huguenot who went from Holland to England at the time William and Mary took possession of the throne in 1688. He went from England to Ireland with the expedition that went to raise the siege of Londonderry, and formed a part of Count Schomberg's battalion at the battle of the Boyne about 1690. He settled in Enniskillen, Ireland, from whence one Joseph Candor came to America and settled in Derry township, Dauphin county,

The Candors immigrated, according to oral history, from around
Enniskillen, Ireland, before 1735 and lived in Chester and then the
Derry, Lancaster Co., PA, area. Immigrant pair seems to be a Josias/
Josiah Candour (1666-1748) and wife Rose (1682-1739), buried along
with probable son Joseph Candour (1713-1784) and [2nd?] wife Mary
(1742-1797) in the Donegal Presbyterian cemetery, Mt. Joy, PA. Joseph
seems to have land and interests also in Cumberland Co. and the area
that became Dauphin Co.

From the cemetery data and bios of descendants who moved to Illinois,
it would seem that Josias CANDOUR/CANDOR/CANDER and probable wife Rose (buried apparently next to each other) were [the] immigrant ancestors.

They were supposedly of Huguenot heritage, but by the time they lived in Lancaster Co., they were intertwined with their Scotch-Irish neighbors in complex, multiple ways.

[Huguenots practiced a form of Protestantism in France aligned with John Calvins theological view that salvation in the Christian religion could be found by reading the Bible and interpreting what you read yourself. You could go to heaven with your own individual faith without needing to go to any church. It started In the early 1500s. The religion was against the Catholic and Monarchists systems of the time. The governmental system passed laws to restrict the religion as it may lead to civil war. (It did!) This resulted in many battles and the deaths of thousands of Huguenots over many years. The Huguenots held to their religion fervently and escaped France spreading to other countries.

Henry IV created the Edict of Nantes in 1598 to give the Huguenots a small amount of religious freedom. It was revoked in 1685 and replaced with the Edict of Fontainbleau - laws that oppressed, stigmatized and penalized Huguenots. While not to the extent that the Nazi's attempted to commit genocide on Jewish people, the laws were similar in that it would remove the Huguenots by attrition. Over fifty thousand Huguenots escaped France between 1670 and 1710 and migrated around the world.

The Promulgation of the Edict of Toleration ended the persecution of the Huguenots in France 1787.]
