Harriet Elisabeth Beecher

Harriet was born on June 14th, 1811 in Litchfield, CT. Harriet's father was Lyman Beecher and her mother was Roxanna Foote. Her paternal grandparents were David Beecher and Mary Lewis Elliot. She had a brother and a sister, named Henry and Catherine. She was the second oldest of the three children. She died at the age of 85 on July 1st, 1896 in Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.

General Notes
- She was the author of the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, which contributed so much to popular feeling against slavery that it is cited among the causes of the American Civil War.
  
  In 1832 Harriet moved with her family to Cincinnati, Ohio, where Lyman Beecher became President of Lane Theological Seminary. At that time, Cincinnati was considered the western frontier of the United States. In Cincinnati, Harriet met and married Calvin E. Stowe, a professor at Lane. Six of the Stowes' seven children were born in Cincinnati.
