    As an American descendant of this couple, I have written two large histories of this family, covering some of the Canadian histories, and including much American ancestry from this couple. I went to France years ago and went to the village of St. Julien, a lovely place, and the local Notary gave me some notes about a family of this name who lived in this area in the late 1500's, and early 1600's, not far from the St. Julien area, and they lived next to a family named Bastier, so no doubt some distant relationship exists between Oliver and his wife, and these people who were titled as Seigneurs, and as a mayor of a local village. The historians in Languedoc tend to think that the originator/s of the Lacoste family from this area may have come from Provence, and the Provencal historians tend to believe that early on the La Coste family held title to much land near Apt, and Lacoste France in Provence, and that early on in the early 1300's the family name was styled as della Costa, and that a Northern Italian ancestry was possible, without proof of course. I have a great deal of information about this family, and if anyone is descended from an American branch of this family, I may be able to help.
    
    Alexandre Lacoste was born ca. 1665 in the small mountain village of St. Julien de La Nef, in the Diocese of Nisme (Nimes), Languedoc, France. He often took the nick-name of Languedoc, which denoted his place of birth. My distant cousin Jean Lacoste, and Marguerite Lacoste in Montreal has a lot of information about this man. But this much I do know; In 1684 or so Alexandre left La Rochelle, France with the de Troye's regiment as a private in the French Army. It is possible that Alexandre arrived in early 1685, for there is a little confusion as to the exact date. The name of the regiment was "Troupes de La Marine". He served in this regiment until May, 1688, he was most likely with his commander in Fort Niagara at this time. He was most likely a skilled soldier, a woodsman, fisherman, and trader. He probably knew how to paddle a canoe, and most likely make one. The winters in Quebec were harsh so he had to endure long cold climates, which only made this man hardier, and stronger. He probably had contact with some of the local natives, he may even had a little knowledge about their language, so he could trade with them. Alexandre eventually left the Army and became a Yeoman farmer across the river from Montreal, and he settled in Boucherville. In 1684 his regiment went to battle with the Iroquois in upstate New York, and in 1688 he was probably with his regiment in Ft. Albany, NY. In 1687 his regiment went by flat-boat, and canoe to capture Ft. Hayes in the Hudson's bay area in Northern Quebec. In 1690 he probably saw action when Phipps, a British General, attacked Quebec City. At this time he was attached to the "DEs Bergere's Regiment". On 07 Jan., 1688 he married first to Jeane Catherine Robin. She died in childbirth, and on 24 April, 1690 he married again to Marguerite Deniau. He was a sociable man, who took part in his local Roman Catholic Parish in Boucherville, attending many ceremonies, being a witness to many baptisms, and marriages. The churches name was Ste. Famille de Boucherville. He settled into Boucherville as a farmer, and hunter, and as a part-time soldier, and fur trapper. Sometimes he had to canoe his family from Boucherville to Ft. Montreal for protection against roving Indians. In 1691 he took a lease for 6 years on a farm at a place called "Petit Bois". The lease was obligated in 1700, and he took possession of this land at this time. In 1691, and in 1697 he rented a cow. Tax records show that he paid taxes on this small farm in 1695, and 1697. On 20 Feb., 1700 he quit his obligation on the farm, and finally took ownership. In 1697 he purchased a boat, and he owned horses. He had a family consisting of Marie Therese, born to his first wife, she died young. The rest of the children, Francois, Helene, Jean Baptiste, Marguerite, and Marie Angelique were born to his second wife. Other children by his second wife were Louis, Antoine, Andre, and Marguerite. I am descended as follows. Oliver-Alexandre, Francois, Andre, Francis, Michael, Cornelius Lewis, George William, Albert Reid, Ellsworth, and me Ellsworth John La Coste. My Francis La Coste left Montreal in 1776, and walked to Albany with a friend to enlist in the Canadian Regiment in the American Continental Army to fight the British, he married a woman named Mary, of New York ancestry, and his family has spread throughout the United States.
