    Louis Houde, son of Noel Houde and Anne Lefebvre was born in 1617 in Manou, diocese of Chartres in the county of Perche, now the department of Eure et Loir. He arrived in New France in 1647 and worked for at least three years in the household of the Seigneur Noel Juchereau de Chastellees. He quickly acquired land in Saint-Augustin, in Québec City(where the Grand-Allee is now) and in the seignory of Sillery.
    
    He married Madeleine Boucher on January 12, 1655 in her father's home at Château-Richer. Madeleine--daughter of Marin Boucher and Perrine Mallet--was fourteen years old. Within the next two years Louis acquired new farms in Beaupré and on the ÎIle d'Orléans. In 1658, the family was established on land with a frontage of four arpents (about 767 feet) along the river and extending into the island. They remained there over the twenty four years that saw the birth of thirteen of their fourteen children. (For most of the history of French Canada, land was held by "Seigneurs" or land-lords who received rents from those who held leases which were bought, sold and passed to heirs much like deeds.)
    
    As the children began to establish their own homesteads, the farm was obviously too small. Consequently, the family moved to Sainte-Croix de Lotbinière (above Québec on the south bank of the Saint Lawrence River) on a huge holding acquired from the Ursulines of Québec. The sons each had their own holding and some of them took surnames reflecting the characteristics of their land: Desrochers (stony), Desruisseaux (with brooks), and Bellefeuill (with trees).
    
    Lous Houde was obviously successful in his business dealings and by way of philantropy donated the land for the first church of Sainte-Croix.
    
    Although all records are lost, it is thought that Louis Houde died in 1712 at the age of 95. His wife lived on to an equally venerable age. The descendants of Louis Houde and Madeleine Boucher are now found throughout Canada and in many areas of the United States.

    Louis Houde is the sole Canadian ancestor of the families Houde, Houle, Desrosiers, Bellefeuille and Desruisseauix. Louis was born in France, in the Perche region, in Marou in the diocese of Chartres in 1617. He was the son of Noel Houde and Anne Lefebvre. Accompanied by a few friends from the same French region, Louis came to Canada for the purpose of working in the service of Lord Noel Juchereau who was conducting a recruitment campaign in the Perche region. Having embarked at Dieppe and having made the crossing on a boat of the Campagnie des Cent-Associés, commanded by a certain Marsolet, Louis Houde arrived in Tadoussae in 1647at the age of 30. During the course of the next two years, Louis is in the service of Charles LeGardeur de Tully, Lord of the Québec region. In 1649, along with his friend, Louis Dufour, he acquired a piece of land in the domain (seigniory) of Cap-Rouge. It was a property of twelve acres along the river, purchased from Jean Jucherau. He would sell it a few month later for 55 pounds.
    
    On January 12, 1655, Louis Houde, then nearly forty years old, decided to unite his destiny to that of Madeline Boucher, a young girl of thirteen years. They would have fourteen children (nine girls and five boys). One of the girls would die at an early age. After his marriage, Louis carried out numerous purchases and sales of land. It is logical to assume that because he was a master of his trade, he had an easier task in renovating the buildings and consequently in finding a better price. He must have had good business sense, since he drew important profits from all the business transactions. In June, 1958, the young couple acquired a plot of land in the domain of Lirec, in the parish of La Sainte-Famille, in the Isle de 'Orleans. They remained there twenty-three years. The property on the Isle de 'Orleans bordered the river for a distance of two acres by seventy-two acres deep. In 1681, about forty acres were under cultivation and the Houdes raised eight cattle. Louis who wanted to keep his children around him and get them started found that the property on the island was becoming too limited. Madeline agreed to leave her island and the family acquired an immense holding of nine acres on the river, in the domain of Lotbinière. This region would consitute the future parish of Sante-Croix. At the advanced age of 95 at his death in 1712, Louis Houde had passed on his lands to his sons and had made a gift of a site for the first church. He had 75 grandchildren of whom thirty-one grandsons with the name Houde.
    
    THE FAMILY NAMES: A) HOUDE DESROCHERS The parcel of land provided to Louis, Jr. by his father, Louis Houde, looked out on the cliffs of the river. People began to call it "Houdedes Roches" and the name ended up attaching itself to certain descendants of Louis. B) HOUDE DESRESISSEAUX The parcel of land provided to Jacques by his father, Louis Houde, opposite the river, extended over small ravines whose streams watered the surrounding valley. People called this land by its most notable characteristic "Houde des Russeaux". C) HOUDE BELLEFEUILLE The parcel of land provided to Joseph, the eleventh child of the Houdes, was embellished with remarkable groves of maple and oaks. People named it "Houde des Belles Feuilles", hence the name of Bellefeuille. D) HOUDE HOULE In the book "Ancestors' Coats of Arms" Father Julien Deziel explains: "At the beginning of the Eighteenth century, a grandson of the ancestor Gabriel established himself in the region of Nicolet, in La Doie-du-Febvre. He adopted, along with his descendents, the spelling "Houle". It is not certain that this Gabriel was the only descendant of Louis who had the idea of changing the spelling of his name.

    WHEN LOUIS HOUDE BUILT HOMES
    Seventeenth century homes can still be seen in the Province of Québec. They are tributes to the past, and to the builders who erected them so sound and durable. Louis Houde was one of these talented builders. Louis Houde was born at Manou in the French province of Perche. He was in Canada since 1647. Eight years later he married Madeleine Boucher. His primary trade was as a bricklayer although he headed a large and very important farm (17 acres in 1667). In this new country, work was not lacking for a builder, and neither was building materials. The large forests furnished all the wood necessary to construct the homes. Pine, fir, and oaks were the trees of choice. Granite stones were abundant and were excellent building stones, and blue slate assured quality roofs. The bricklayers were able to work without the worry of running out of materials. Louis Houde, learned his trade in France. It soon became evident that construction methods in France were different from those in Canada. In Canada, they had to contend with frost, snow, and glacial winds from the Laurentians. He and his fellow builders adopted ingenious and efficient methods that resulted in a domestic architecture that became typically regional. The builders/bricklayers constructed their homes using simple plans and were almost always identical. The "typical home" included a large living room.

    Louis emigrated to New France in 1647 and like most colonists he was a farmer and land clearer; on occasion he worked at his trade of mastermason. As Louis approached forty he decided that he had enough of Bachelorhood and fixed his sights on a young girl of thirteen. He and Madeleine were married at her father's house by Father Ragueneau.
