Louis I, known as The Pious, was born in August 0778 in Casseneuil, France.  The Pious' father was Charlemagne “Charles the Great” Holy Roman Emperor and his mother was Hildegarde Countess of Swabia (Linzgau) Empress of the Holy Roman Empire.  His paternal grandparents were Pepin III (Pippin) “The Short” King of France and Bertha (Bertrada) “The Broadfoot” of Laon; his maternal grandparents were Gerold I (Childebrand) Count of Vinzgau and Imma Duchess of Swabia. He had a brother named Pepin I (Carlomon).  He was the younger of the two children.  He died at the age of 61 on June 20th, 0840 in Ingelheim, Rhinehessen, Hesse.  He was buried in Cathâedrale d'Aachen, Aachen, Rheinland.
