General Notes

In 1512 William Lygon was born in Gloucestershire, England. As a youth of just seventeen, he married Eleanor Dennis. The contract of their marriage contained a fascinating condition. The fathers of the bride and groom were to clothe the couple according to their degree and William Dennis was to find his daughter a place to live while Margery and Anne Lygon were living. Like his father, William lived at Arle until he succeeded to Madresfield. William and Eleanor were the parents of eleven children.

In 1538 William Lygon was listed among the loyalists of Lord Oliver Cromwell as preferred to serve Henry VIII. In 1544 he served in the army when Henry VIII invaded France and captured Boulogne. William was in the vanguard with ten foot soldiers. William was the justice of the Hundreds Court of Cheltenham. From 1550 to 1551, and again from 1560 to 1561, he was the sheriff of Worcestershire.
William Lygon died 29 September 1567 and was buried 'in the high chancel' 2 October 1567. His wife survived him and in June 1568 was living at Arle. She was still alive in 1579.
