Richard Lygon

  • About the same year Christopher Columbus discovered America, Richard Lygon was born at Gloucestershire, England. Around 1511 he married Margaret Greeville. She was the daughter of Sir William Greeville, a knight and justice of the court in 1510. Sir Richard and Margaret were the parents of nine children.
    Sir Richard in 1523 was on a commission to collect a subsidy in Worcestershire. He was knighted on 30 May 1535 at the coronation of Queen Anne Boleyn. Sir Richard was the sheriff of Gloucestershire 1534 to 1535 and of Worcestershire in 1548 to 1549. His son William Lygon, would later serve in the same capacity.
    In 1535 Sir Richard was a justice of Great Malvern and in 1536 he furnished one hundred men to send against the Northern Rebels and attended Henry VIII, King of England in person. William furnished sixty foot soldiers served in the French War of 1544 when Henry VIII invaded France and captured Boulogne. In 1545 was chief steward at Hundred Courts and chief steward of the King Court at Cheltenham.
    Margaret died in 1542 and Sir Richard took a second wife named Joan. Sir Richard died 20 March 1556/7.
