General Notes

The books, 'Henry Watkins of Henrico County,' by Jane McMurtry Allen (1985) and 'The Ligon Family and Connections,' are in error in showing this Samuel (who married Elizabeth Jameson), as the testator in WB 1 P 377, Chest. Co., Va. This is an error which has been recognized and corrected in 'Some Watkins
Families of Virginia and their kin,' (1989), by John Hale Stutesman, and in 'The Hancock Family of England and America,' (1993), by Arvil Dale Hancock. These later books correctly show that said will was in fact made by this Samuel's father, [the Samuel (1675-1760) who m. Johan his cousin]. Also, see letter dated 5 Mar 1999 from Arvil Hancock confirming this as well.

Samuel was only left one gun, one sermon book, and his father's wearing apparel by his father's will. Since his brothers and sisters received all of the land and slaves owned by their father, Samuel left Virginia and move to NC. In the 1786 census, he is in Granville County, NC and in 1790 census, he is in Montgomery County, NC. Then he moved to the Sinking Creek area of Wilson County, Tennessee

Samuel Hancock (-c.1760) was a son of Johan and Samuel Hancock. On 1 November 1733, Samuel Hancock Jr. sold two tracts of 255 acres on the south side of the James River near Ashen Swamp to William Robertson. A 155-acre portion had been a gift from his grandfather to his parents, Samuel and Johan Hancock, and was where his father once lived. The other tract was part of a 200-acre tract that his grandfather had given to his son William Hancock and that descended at his death to Robert Hancock. Robert had sold the land to Samuel Hancock Sr. who sold 100 acres to William Robertson.
On 3 May 1736, Samuel bought 400 acres on Winterpock Creek in Goochland (now Chesterfield) County from Thomas Jones. Thomas had inherited this land from his father, Daniel Jones, who had bought it from Richard Grills on 2 July 1715. On 28 April 1740, Samuel Hancock Jr. 'of Henrico County' sold to John Pride [1658] 'of Henrico County' 400 acres on the lower side of West Creek in Amelia County for £50. This was land William Robertson had secured with a patent 20 June 1733.
Samuel married Elizabeth Jameston, daughter of Elizabeth Cox and John Jameston, of Henrico County.
Samuel lived in Dale Parish, Henrico County, Virginia, in that part that is now Chesterfield County. That county taxed him on six tithables in 1756. Listed in his household was his son Simon.
