The surname Gurganey is extremely rare in English records. Edward would be the tenth child of John Gurgeyney and his wife, Dorothie Brigham, who were married at Long Crendon, Bucks., 30 January 1563/4. The citation for the baptism at Long Crendon is the parish register [FHL film #919238].

The father, John was styles "Mr." at the baptism of James, and "gent[leman]" at the baptism of his son Paule.

John Gurgaine [sic] was named in the will of Henry Burname, of Long Crendon (will dated 18 Oct. 1600, will proved 26 June 1601). He would be the John Gurgeyney who was plaintiff in a suit against Richard Franknell/Fraunckelyn over land in Bryerhill, Bucks., in Chancery before 1579.

Hugh Gurgayne/Gurgeynye, subscribed to the University of Oxford 5 July 1587, receiving his BA from Trinity College 15 July 1592, and his MA 7 July 1597. Hugh became a Roman Catholic, and was mentioned with his brother John in State Papers 1605-1611 (SP 89/3). Hugh was father of John Gurgany, of London, who matriculated at Christ Church College, Oxford, 17 March 1625/6, aged 19. This John also received his BA (1627) and MA (1630), was chaplain of Merton College, created BD 16 Jan. 1642/3, and finally Doctor of Divinity 15 December 1660. He was canon of Sarum [Salisbury] in 1660, and of Chichester, vicar of Yapton, co. Sussex, 1662, and rector of Clapham, co. Surrey, from 1663 until his death in August 1675. He was buried at Clapham.

There was a will for a Joan Gorgaine of Deptford, Kent, and St. Saviour, Southwark, Surrey [a suburb of London] proved in 1622, but she mentioned no Gurganey relatives, so apparently died childless.

There was an Edward Gurgayne/Gurgyn/Gorgon who received his MA at Oxford in1511, and a Guy Gurgayne/Gorgayn/Gurgeyny who received his BA at Oxford University in 1518, fellow of Merton College in 1521, MA 1522/3, was vicar of Wolford, co. Warwick in 1524, and died in 1544.

Ann Woodliffe, born ca. 1618 (aged 7 in the 1624/5 muster), was daughter of John Woodliffe, of Prestwood, co. Buckingham, England, and was in Virginia by about 1608. He was a member of the Virginia Company. Ann was stated to be kin of Thomas Harris and his wife Adria Gurganey. Ann's father did not appear in the 1624/5 muster, so it is presumed he either returned to England, died of the "sickness" or was slain in the Massacre. This would explain why Ann was then residing in Thomas Harris’s household. (End of Paul Reed].
