Sir Walter Boggan

  • The following is taken from Krechel, Frances B., Compiler, "THE PATRICK BOGGAN FAMILY: Patrick, Benjamin, James and their Sister Jane."
    
    According to family records, Sir Walter Boggan was a member of Irish Royalty and his wife, Lydia, was a member of the O'Rorie Moore family who came from Ireland to Barbedoes (sic) to Charleston, S.C.
    
    Boggan is not a common name, but is seen frequently spelled like it sounds-Bogen, Boggen, Boggin. In researching families, certain names appear repeatedly and this is a factor in tracing lines.
    
    Herman L. Bogan, a college professor and an avid genealogist and historian in Memphis, Tenn., has found a reference of some family disenchantment and the removal of one of the "Gs" (sic) from the name.
    
    A small book on "Bogen" in the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, Mass. Shows this family located in Virginia, very proud of their Scotch beginnings, and of course widely different given names.
    
    It is thought these young people were born in Castle Finn, Donegal County, Ireland, and came to this country as young adults. Quite likely well educated, as they could write their names on many documents that they signed, rather than making their Mark "X," much used for a signature in those days.
    
    Port of Entry is unknown, but a William Boggan has been found on the Chester Co., PA tax rolls as early as 1740. Then again, a William Boggan, Sr. and a William Boggan, Jr. are shown in the 1790 Census for Anson Co., NC. William Boggan, Sr. has two females and William Boggan, Jr. has two males over age 16 and neither family had slaves. The compiler has seen a document signed by a William Boggan with his Mark X.
    
    Another version of this story is found in "Descendants of Sir Walter Boggan of Ireland," compiled by "The late Mrs. Pettigrew of Pine Bluff, Ark., which may be found in the Vertical File in the Genealogy Library, Raleigh, NC. To wit:
    
         "Upon the death of Sir Walter Boggan, of Castle Finn, Donegal County, Ireland, his three sons, Patrick, James and Benjamin, with their sister Sarah Jane, came to America, 1765-6, long before the Revolution, and settled in North Carolina, presumably in Anson County, near what is now Wadesboro.
    
         Patrick, the eldest, married Betsy Dabbs, or Dobbs, of North Carolina, and their descendants are scattered through many of the Southern States. The name has never become common, and has few, if any variations. There are Bogans living in North Carolina, and other states, but no amount of research has revealed the fact that the two families are in any way related.
    
         The Boggans have always been noted for their bravery, and integrity and although they have taken a prominent place in the history of the places in which they have lived, little or no attention has been paid to records. And even at the present time it is hard to interest the descendants in sharing the records they do possess.
    
         Sir Walter Boggan, of Castle Finn, Donegal County, Ireland, married in Ireland, and his children were born there, the name of his wife has been lost to history, not Even her first name having been handed down to posterity.  . . ."
    
    
    Editorial note:  Mrs. Pettigrew's version differs mainly in regard to the name of Sir Walter's wife.
