Abraham Sturley

Abraham was born in 1550. He died at the age of 64 on August 28th, 1614 in Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire, England.

General Notes
- 1598: (January 24th) Abraham Sturley writes to Richard Quiney about land in Shottery near Stratford and about reducing his land taxes in Stratford. (October 1st) Listed as a defaulter of taxes at St. Helen's Parish, Bishopsgate, London.
  
  A letter from Abraham Sturley to Richard Quiney asking that "our countriman" Mr. Shaksper procure a loan for him.
  
  In another letter Abraham Sturley refers to him as "Mr. SHAK" and makes the same request.
  
  1598-1-24: Letter. Abraham Sturley wrote to his brother-in-law that "our countriman mr Shaksper is willing to disburse some monei upon some od yardeland or other Shottrei or neare about us..." (Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Records Office, Misc. Doc. I, 135).
  
  1598-11-4: Letter. Abraham Sturley wrote Richard Quiney that "our countriman mr Wm Shak. would procure us monei which I will like of as I shall heare when wheare & howe: and I prai let not go that occasion if it mai sort to ani indifferent condicions" (Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Records Office, Misc. Doc. I, 136).
  
  November 1575 - November 1576
  We had a visit from the government inspector concerning the administration of the Status of Caps. This measure, designed to stimulate the wool trade by making it compulsory for men to wear woollen caps on Sundays and Holy Days, is not really well enough known and by no means universally observed. Other visitors were JPs from Warwick, who cost us 11s 8d in wine and sugar while staying in Stratford deciding what taxes we should pay!
  
  There was a quiet wedding in December between Abraham Sturley and the 14-year-old daughter of the high bailiff, Richard Hill. Their first child is expected in August.
  
  Much to our surprise, one of our former vicars, Roger Dyos (appointed as a Catholic in the previous reign) has been able to recover his unpaid salary due to him when he hurriedly left the town in 1559. The Corporation spent a good deal of money in legal fees, trying to avoid repayment, but it seems that Dyos now has influencial friends.
