  Contains a list of surnames, most of them in many variant spellings, of the "Noble Families of Poitou (an area which included La Rochelle and environs in France) and among them is Guerin.
  
  I see the variants Caraint and Cairand, and the variants
  Quairant and Quairant, in addition to the more familiar
  Guerry, Guerin and Guerrant. And, I was amazed to see the spelling GRANT on this list of Noble families of Poitou as well, because I considered Grant when trying to find the origins of the surname of "Grace CERANT" who married Huguenot Jean Besly. You will see a number of Besly variant spellings on this list of Noble families of Poitou as well.
  
  Le premier Guerin en sol québécois utilisait le patronyme Guérin dit St-Hilaire probablement pour situer son lieu d'origine (c'est du moins l'hypothèse la plus plausible). En effet, St-Hilaire du Harcouet est la ville d'importance voisine de St-Symphorien des Monts le village de Guillaume (200 habitants max.) Il utilisait sans doute ce "nom dit" pour que l'on situe plus facilement sa région d'origine .
  Par la suite avec l'adoption du Code civil en 1866 les habitants ont du choisir un seul nom.
  
  Il faut dire aussi que dans le temps certains utilisent indifféremment un des deux noms. On retrace une personne née Guérin, mariée St-Hilaire et décédée Guérin .
